Lake Conway is the largest man-made lake in the United States. Occupying nearly 7,000 acres with 52 miles of shoreline, the lake is nestled in between the bustling college town of Conway and the sleepy city of Mayflower. Located thirty minutes north of Arkansas’ state capitol, Little Rock, there’s a wide array of fun things to do at the lake, both on land and on water. Take a look at some of our favorites!

5 Fun Things to Do at Lake Conway

Boating

Whether you’re bringing your own boat or looking for a rental, the lake is an excellent spot to spend a day on the water. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission provides several public boat launch areas free for public use if you’re bringing your own equipment. You can also buy bait, purchase other fishing supplies, and rent your very own boat at the lake’s commercial docks.

Fishing

The lake is home to many major sportfish like largemouth and white bass, blue catfish, bluegill, bream, crappie, and flathead catfish. Hidden tree stumps, rocks, and logs in the water offer the perfect habitat for fish. Sportfishing is a way of life here – the lake also features a nursery pond to help raise new fish and maintain the fish population of the lake. The best news is – the lake is accessible to anglers of all ages and activity levels.

Hiking

The Bell Slough State Wildlife Area and Nature Trail rests along the southern shore and is just outside the town of Mayflower. The trail is made of two loops and is 2.25 miles long. The path is well maintained and level enough for walking, running, or bike riding. Keep an eye out for observation blinds and lookout points which allow visitors to view wildlife without disturbing their habitat.

Wildlife Spotting

The Audubon Society lists the lake as an important bird area in Arkansas, specifically the Camp Robinson Special Use Area located on the lake’s eastern shore. The 4,000-acre area is home to a number of vulnerable bird species like the Hooded Mergansers and Least Terns. If you get really lucky, you may even spot an Osprey or Bald Eagle nest. Many trails offer observation spots so be sure to keep your eyes peeled and binoculars at the ready!

Have a Picnic

Take your lunch outside on the picturesque shores. Make a pit-stop at one of Conway or Mayflower’s many eateries or restaurants and make your order to-go! Mayflower Lakeside Park is a great spot along the shores of the lake to set up your own dining room in the great, wide open!
