Spark plugs can't generate sufficient power to create combustion by themselves. An ignition coil boosts the power of each spark plug and enables combustion to occur. Over time, these coils can fail, and your Kia will develop engine problems. As your Kia dealer, we'd like you to know some signs that you need to visit us to have a faulty ignition coil replaced. Advice From Your Kia Dealer: Signs You Have a Faulty Ignition Coil Poor Acceleration Combustion is created by igniting the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder, which produces the energy to move your car. As you step on the accelerator, more fuel is injected into the intake manifold, more air is drawn through the air filter, and other components move faster. If you step on the accelerator and your engine is straining to reach the designated speed, you could have an ignition coil problem. more Each spark plug produces 12 volts of power, and the ignition coil connected to the plug boosts this to 50,000 volts. This massive boost in power allows the contents of the cylinders to ignite smoothly and efficiently. A damaged coil means the spark plug must try and ignite the fuel-air mixture by itself. This will reduce your acceleration, and you'll hear strange engine noises. We can test each coil and replace any damaged ones for you. Old Coils Coils age like all other engine components, and they will eventually break. Under normal conditions, your ignition coils last for approximately 100,000 miles , butthey can be damaged by spark plug problems and other engine issues. We check the condition of your coils during your regular Kia services to ensure that they are still in good condition. A single damaged coil can result in misfiring, as the spark plug can't ignite the fuel-air mixture without the extra power. If more than one coil is damaged, your engine will stall as there isn't enough power for combustion. We'll examine your engine to determine the problem and can quickly replace any worn or damaged coils. Check Engine Light is On Sensors are connected to every vital system on your car, and they relay information continually to your car's computer. This information enables your computer to make essential decisions for your Kia. The sensors will also report on any problems with the component they're attached to. The sensors will identify worn or damaged coils, and they will send a warning to your computer. The computer will illuminate the check engine light in response. An illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily mean you have a coil problem, but it does mean we need to find and repair the cause of a problem in your engine. These are examples of problems we can fix. 3 Electrical Problems You Should Always Fix at Your Kia Dealer Damaged Alternator The alternator in your Kia is responsible for generating all your car's electricity. It does this by converting mechanical energy into AC and then DC. The power it produces is then transmitted to each system and device via wiring. An alternator has a relatively long life of approximately eight years. This powers the starter motor, and the motor then cranks your engine. If your starter motor is damaged, it's impossible to start the engine. You can test for a starter motor failure by listening for a slight click when you press the start button. If you hear a click, the starter is working but isn't receiving enough power. If you don't hear a click, the starter motor has failed. Our technicians will examine the motor and repair or replace it depending on the situation. Damaged Spark Plugs The spark plugs provide the ignition source for combustion. A spark plug is attached to each cylinder in your engine. When the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder is fully compressed, the spark plug will ignite it to create combustion. Spark plugs wear out over time, and we routinely replace them according to your car's service schedule. Spark plugs can also be damaged by other engine problems, for example, a low level of air in the engine. If your engine doesn't have enough air, the engine will become fuel-rich. A fuel-rich engine makes combustion more difficult as fuel can't burn without enough air to allow the spark plugs to ignite successfully.
