Motor oil has a high viscosity when it's cold and a lower viscosity at the engine's normal operating temperature so that it's always the right thickness to lubricate your engine properly.
Multi-grade oils have two viscosity grades (such as 10W-30, a common multi-grade oil). The first number '10W' is the viscosity of the oil at cold temperatures and the second number is the viscosity at 212 degrees.
